Currency, Tips

#Money

The national currency is the Belizean dollar. Businesses and shops in Belize do not accept Euros. The US dollar is accepted everywhere as payment. It is advised to have a few US dollars at the beginning of your stay. Prioritize small denominations, as it is difficult to get change on big denominations.

Travel checks are only accepted in hotels and grand restaurants. As for credit cards, they are accepted almost everywhere except in small restaurants where you will be asked for cash.

The most economic solution is to withdraw cash from an ATM, preferably in large amounts to decrease the number of flat rates.

Beware ! You will not be able to exchange Belizean dollars outside of the country. Remember to spend your Belizean dollars before leaving Belize.

#CREDIT CARDS

There are banks almost everywhere in the country, as well as ATMs. Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards are accepted everywhere and enable you to withdraw money from ATMs.

You can pay with a credit card in shops. A surcharge or commission (5 to 10%) may be charged by the shop or your bank.

Avoid paying by card in local grocery stores !

Find out about possible extra fees before your departure, warn your bank that you’re going abroad, and perhaps increase your card’s spending limit.

#CURRENCY

The local currency in Belize is the Belizean dollar (BZD).

1$ USD equals 2$ BZD.

The US dollar is easily accepted everywhere in the country.

Exchange is possible in banks (there are few exchange offices).

Automated teller machines are for the most part found in the main cities and urban areas.

For each bank transaction, you will need to show your passport.

A 9% tourist tax is applied in hotels and Resorts.

For activities and excursions, it is customary to also tip the guides.
